Samburu National Reserve

Located 350 km north of Nairobi is this 165 km² National Reserve that runs along the crocodile infested Ewaso Ng’iro (Ewaso Nyiro) river. It was the home of Kamunyak, the famous lioness that adopted Oryx calves in the recent past. This is the best place to see the Gerenuk (with its long neck and how it stands on its hind legs reaching out to food at great heights), the Grevy’s Zebra that is to be found naturally in this region and the rare Reticulated Giraffe. All the big five are also well represented plus the rare African Hunting (Wild) Dog and many species of birds notably the Marshal Eagle, Pygmy Falcon and the Somali Ostrich.

The reserve is part of northern Kenya's rangelands ecosystem, which includes Buffalo Springs National Reserve to the south of Ewaso Ng'iro river and Shaba National Reserve to the east.

It is fascinating to learn about the northern dry land lions. The males do not have manes and they are smaller and sleeker than those found in Maasai Mara. Samburu lions are very much like those of Tsavo National Park, yet the Tsavo male lions, although lacking of manes, are bigger.

Samburu is a region inhabited by the Samburu tribe who share a great deal of ancestral and linguistic ties with the Maasai. A visitor is normally impressed by these courteous and cultured people who at the same time are known for their prowess, ferocity and bravely. One is encouraged to visit the private wildlife sanctuaries that border the reserve and where Samburu culture is introduced.
