Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage

Located next to the Nairobi National Park, this orphanage caters for young elephants (two of which are albinos) who have been orphaned mainly by poaching or have been separated from their mothers for some reason such as abandonment after having been hopelessly stuck in a mud hole or are swept away by strong river currents. The young elephants are raised at the orphanage for at least three years and later slowly re-introduced back into the wild, a process that can take 5-10 years. This is a sanctuary where one is allowed to get really close to the elephants when they are being milk-fed or playing around the mud hole. Since elephants are not to be found in the Nairobi National Park, the orphanage offers one a chance to see an elephant at close quarters without having to go to other distant parks.
